How Do I Practice?

You will get the most enjoyment out of class if you are able to practice!  Practice at a similar time each day.

Vary the activities. Spend some time with your tin sheet, some time at the keyboard, some time singing, and some time writing music rhythm stores.

For Sunshine students: 10-15mins a day, 5 days a week
For Sunbeam students: 15-20mins a day, 5 days a week

1. Singing:

  • Children love to sing! Help your child find their singing voices by using voice channels.

    • Four different voice channels: Singing, Talking, Whispering, Shouting

  • Sing songs with your child while driving in the car. Put the CD on and listen as you go along!

2. Solfege:

  • Solfege is an excellent tool to enhance ear training

  • Sing by ear and hand signs patterns and songs

3. Keyboard:

  • Children learn through repetition. Play the songs 3 times each practice

  • Use tinsheet / magnets to review critter stories on the keys and notes

  • Practice recognizing finger numbers

  • Play with independent movement of each finger

  • Help your child to point and chant while playing

  • Make practice time a positive experience!

4. Rhythm Stories:

  • Practice creating, changing, and clapping rhythms on your felt sheet story boards. Students and parents may take turns creating and clapping rhythms!

5. Listening:

  • Repeat in-class listening activities as best as you can at home

  • Pattern recognition is an important precursor to note-reading

6. Ensembles:

  • MYC develops a child’s sense of rhythm through playing rhythm ensembles. A child can learn rhythm and beat without having to worry about pitch, or what notes they are playing

  • Playing rhythm instruments is also a favorite part of the class!

  • Parent - please help your child to point and chant while your child plays

7. Homework:

  • This section reinforces the concepts covered in each class

  • It is a great bonding time to work on fun and interesting homework with your child and share in class with the teacher
