☀️🎻 Opus 1 is thrilled to feature MYC Alumni Darren! Darren, now 9 years old, began his music journey in our MYC program, completing both Sunshine and Sunbeam. Guided by his growing interest in string instruments, Darren began learning the Cello with Master Cello Teacher, Teacher Elliot. Since starting private lessons, Darren has shown remarkable dedication, determination, and consistency, already completing ABRSM Grades 1 and 2 with Merit and Distinction! Darren actively participates in Opus 1 recitals and events. Teacher Elliot has shared, "As Darren's teacher, I’ve been continually impressed by his dedication, growth, and genuine love for the cello. His hard work and willingness to take on new challenges makes him a joy to teach. He’s come a long way since we started working together, and I’m excited to continue to work with him in the future."
Congratulations to Darren on his accomplishments, we cannot wait to see what he does next!

How did MYC help you become the musician you are today?
When I was in Sunshine class, my teacher, Ms Sici, told me about the “SF Symphony for Kids” performance that I could go see. Out of all the instruments I saw on the stage at SF symphony I was the most intrigued with cello and viola. I saw with my eyes and heard with my ears how cool the instruments could sound like when playing with other instruments together. This inspiration was the beginning of my musical life.
What is something you learned in MYC that you still use in your cello lessons now?
Rhythm - 1/8, 1/4, 1/2 notes
What is one thing you remember really enjoying about MYC?
Singing the sunshine songs in the beginning and the end of the classes. I still remember them 5 years later!
How did MYC help you get started with music? Did it make learning piano and cello easier?
It helps with rhythm. It was my first exposure to music as a 3 year old. I liked the stories of the animals that are associated with each note.
Do you think MYC gave you a strong start in music? Why or how?
It helped me learn the concept of line notes and space notes.
What did it feel like to finish MYC and move into private lessons?
I felt more prepared to learn more music.
How has MYC helped you grow, both in and outside of music?
It helped me with confidence and courage when I performed at the recitals. It helped me with focus and memory when I was practicing my pieces.
